GALVESTON — Fans of Charles Dickens’ classic novel, “A Christmas Carol,” need not fear disappointment in the latest adaptation by Disney.
The 3D IMAX experience is an animated visual masterpiece that presents a fresh retelling of the traditional tale without straying from the story that admirers both know and love.
The movie follows the classic tale of the miserly old Ebenezer Scrooge, voiced by Jim Carrey, who is visited one Christmas by three spirits: the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet to Come, all also voiced by Carrey.
Throughout the night, the spirits take Scrooge on a journey of self discovery to show him how damaging his avarice is and convince him to change his ways to avert a potentially tragic future.
Disney spared no expense in making the film a visual work of art. The 3D IMAX experience seems to engross the viewer in the movie itself with characters and background objects alike seeming to come out of the screen without being overbearing.
The attention to detail makes the visual effects even more realistic by bringing items as seemingly insignificant as a candle into the foreground, making the audience feel part of the movie itself.
Beyond the stunning graphical work, the film’s plot remains as rich as ever. The story remains true to the same narrative seen in countless film adaptations.
While at times some viewers might see the movie as yet another retelling of a tale told many times, Disney adds just enough subtle new details and visual re-imagining of some of the film’s classic scenes to keep the story fresh, yet nostalgic for longtime fans. Carrey’s subtle sense of humor in his portrayal of Scrooge serves as a refreshing addition to a generally serious story, making the film not only heartwarming, but also entertaining.
Despite an engaging story, the movie does suffer occasionally in that some parts of the plot are not particularly well explained, leaving the viewer to assume certain details. Also, some scenes seem to have been added merely to give Disney a chance to show off its visual effects and do not really add to the actual storyline.
While “A Christmas Carol” is generally portrayed in its many remakes as a family oriented film, the Disney remake might not be suitable for some small children in that the ghosts and spirits present throughout the film are graphically portrayed.
Still, the film is truly a remarkable new portrayal of a tale known by innumerable fans and will be sure to please old enthusiasts and create new ones, lifting spirits just in time for the holiday season.
