Over the past couple of days, I have seen some media outlets hype up the situation with Hurricane Ida and a potential low pressure in the Bay of Campeche. Some of these have been "off the wall", so to speak, and I've had a number of persons ask me about them. Before I begin, I would like to point out that named storms in November are not all that rare. We've had them three of the last four years. Second, we've never had a named storm make landfall along the upper-Texas coast. So climatologically speaking, history is on our side.
Voters went to the polls in Galveston County to decide on 11 state constitutional amendments, three bond propositions in Santa Fe, lifting restrictions on alcohol sales in Friendswood, three school board positions in Galveston and the board of directors for the Bolivar Peninsula Special Utility District.
On Oct. 30, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposed an $87 million fine against BP for a lack of compliance with safety regulations and agreed-upon improvements at its Texas City refinery after the March 23, 2005, explosions that killed 15 people.
Public sentiment is so fickle. One week people are ready to take on their government with pitchforks, buckets of tar and bags of feathers. The next week they seem to forget what happened to get them so riled up, only to return to it again with renewed ferocity months later. The city council will take up two issues tomorrow that have been through this cycle of anger and amnesia.
